Founded in january 2010 and based at the Vision Institute in Paris, OPIA Technologies is a company dedicated to the development of an innovative portfolio of ophthalmic medical devices, from prototyping to industrialisation.
The business strategy is to focus on sampling devices for the ocular surface, used to diagnose diseases and monitor treatments.
The first project at OPIA is EYEPRIM®, a device to perform conjunctival impressions of the living eye, enabling further analysis of cells and biomarkers to help diagnose several ocular surface disorders: dry eye, allergies or infections...
OPIA is ideally positionned on large and rapidly growing markets, such as dry eye diseases (> 100 Millions worldwide) were there is a need for early stage and reliable diagnosis.
OPIA has patented and designed a reliable, efficient and ergonomic device to perform conjunctival impressions.
The conjunctival impression technique allows the collection of cells from the conjunctiva in a quasi-painless and non-invasive way, for the purpose of analyses (cytology, cytometry, PCR...) and diagnosis. This technique is recommended by the TFOS (Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society) in their 2007 Report of the International Dry Eye Workshop.
EYEPRIM® device will allow implementation of this sampling technique to make it available to most practitioners. Several Point-of-care tests are under development and will be released in 2012.
In parallel, OPIA is building an innovative pipeline of sampling medical devices for ocular surface (conjunctiva, corneal epithelium, tear film...) based on a proprietary patent portfolio.
OPIA designs, manufactures and processes the regulatory filing of its medical devices, from early-stage idea or proof-of-concept to pilot production or volume manufacture.
OPIA works in close relationship with a selected panel of component suppliers, manufacturers of tools, providers of assembly and packaging techniques, specialized into medical device manufacturing.
Non-clinical and clinical trials are outsourced.
OPIA is operated by Pierre Roy, Engineer from Ecole des Mines de Douai and specialized in polymers technology.
Pierre Roy is the former CEO of Hexamed, a medical device consulting company, CEO of Eyegate Pharma, an ocular drug delivery company now based in Boston, and CTO of Vygon during 12 years, one of the leading European manufacturer of disposable medical devices for anesthesia and intensive care.
OPIA team is composed of engineers highly specialized in device design, biotechnology, clinical development and regulatory filing.
In order to succeed in our project, we gathered stakeholders able to define the clinical and medical needs, thanks to the environment of excellence of the new Vision Institute located on the campus of the French National Center of Ophthalmology, Quinze-Vingts hospital in Paris.
All of our developments are made in close relationship with ophthalmologists and evaluated by them. The EYEPRIM® device is based on an original idea suggested by Christophe Baudouin, Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at Quinze-Vingts Hospital,
Research Director, Vision Institute, INSERM UMRS 968, University Paris 6.
The company was founded by a team of professionals coming from both pharmaceutical, medical device and clinical industry. They share in-depth knowledge and experience in medical, corporate and business development.
